Ball State is now back to .500 at 4-4 after winning three straight games, including a dominant 83-64 win over IUPUI on Saturday. The Cardinals season started a bit rocky with very tough opponents but has taken the right strides with another great win.
Tahjai Teague was the leading scorer for Ball State, finishing with 14 points on 6/8 shooting. Teague added 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 2 blocks for a nice all-around great performance in 24 minutes on the court. He has now scored in double figures for three consecutive games, which all happen to be big Ball State wins.
Sophomore Kyle Mallers racked up his first double-double of the season for the Cardinals, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes. Mallers shot 4/8 on field goals, including 2/4 from distance in 24 minutes on the floor. Mallers by far has been one of the more consistent top performers for Ball State, scoring a minimum of 10 points six times this season.
“I thought it was our best defensive performance of the year, certainly the first half and really the first eight or nine minutes of the second half,” Ball State head coach James Whitford said. “We’ve scored the ball plenty of times this year, and we did again tonight. The difference between tonight’s game and some of the other ones was our defense was better.”
Going Inside the Team Numbers
Ball State shot the ball exceptionally well on Saturday, going 31-58 (53.4%) on field goals, 10-28 (35.7%) on three-pointers, and 11-17 (64.7%) from the charity stripe. Additionally, the Cardinals hauled in 36 total rebounds with 9 on offense and 27 on defense. Finally, Ball State dished out 19 assists, stole the ball 7 times, rejected 4 shots, while only committing 15 total turnovers.
Ball State will travel not too far, as they will face off against Notre Dame in South Bend on Tuesday at 7:00 PM Eastern.
